West Brom v West Ham: Allardyce bemoans fitness woes

Sam Allardyce is wary of a letdown in the FA Cup fifth round versus West Brom following Wednesday s battling draw at Southampton.

Sam Allardyce fears that West Ham s efforts in Wednesday s 0-0 draw with Southampton could take their toll when they visit West Brom in the FA Cup fifth round.

The London club hung on for a point at St Mary s Stadium despite seeing goalkeeper Adrian sent off for handling the ball outside the area.

Jussi Jaaskelainen is likely to fill in for the suspended Spaniard, although Allardyce has already confirmed West Ham s intention to appeal the ban.

Andy Carroll suffered a knee injury shortly after Adrian s dismissal, but continued to hobble around the pitch as the visitors had used all three substitutions.

And, with Che…

Sheffield United earn fitting win at Bramall Lane as Maddy Cusack is remembered

Sheffield United captain Sophie Barker vowed to keep Maddy Cusack at the forefront of her mind after the Blades resumed their season following the death of their team-mate last month.

Cusack was the Blades’ longest-serving player, and the first to make 100 appearances for the club, when she died on September 20 and last weekend’s game against Crystal Palace was postponed as they came to terms with her death.

But they returned to action in the Women’s Championship at Bramall Lane on Saturday and got a result for Cusask as they came from behind to beat London City Lionesses 3-1.

They fell behind to Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah’s first-half opener but a second-half rally from the hosts saw Isobel Goodwin grab two and Ash Hodson also score to earn a fitting three p…

Le Tissier: Man Utd should be targeting Schneiderlin this summer

Southampton F.C. legend Matt Le Tissier has conceded the Saints are likely to lose Morgan Schneiderlin when the transfer window re-opens this summer.

The France international, 25, has been linked with North London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur on several occasions over the past 12 months, but reports are suggesting United are now leading the race for the player s signature.

After selling the likes of Adam Lallana, Calum Chambers, Luke Shaw and Rickie Lambert, the Saints blocked a move for Schneiderlin last summer.

However, Le Tissier does not expect the club to prevent Schneiderlin from securing a move to a top-four club in the coming weeks.

It s probably more likely that he ll leave than stay,” Le Tissier told Sky Sports. The big …

I m just buzzing, and it s a dream come true really to be here,  the defender told the club s official website.

Football rumours: Manchester United willing to sell Jadon Sancho

What the papers say

Jadon Sancho will be placed on the transfer list by Manchester United unless he apologises to manager Erik ten Hag, according to the Guardian. The England winger, 23, has been out of the first-team picture since criticising Ten Hag in a social media post in early September.

Hannibal Mejbri, who has featured four times since Sancho was sidelined, is one of three United players reportedly set to receive contract extensions. The Manchester Evening News says the 20-year-old Tunisia midfielder and defensive duo Aaron Wan-Bissaka, 25, and Victor Lindelof, 29, will have their current deals extended by a year.

Liverpool have been linked with a move for Bayern Munich midfielder Jamal Musiala. According to the Daily Mirror, the 20-year-old is unhappy at not ha…

Manchester City v Aston Villa: Pellegrini not giving up on title

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini is not giving up on the Premier League title ahead of the home clash against rock-bottom Aston Villa on Saturday.

After beating Liverpool to claim League Cup glory last weekend, City succumbed to a 3-0 loss at Anfield on Wednesday as they failed to seize an opportunity to make ground on title rivals Leicester City, Tottenham and Arsenal – none of whom won in midweek.

City have 11 matches to play and sit 10 points behind leaders Leicester with just one game in hand after losing three league games in a row for the first time since 2008.

However, even though City have been joined on points by rivals Manchester United in the battle for a top-four spot, Pellegrini still only has eyes for a title challenge.

I hope …

Football League Review: Walsall close in on top two, Portsmouth seal play-off place

Walsall moved back to within three points of League One s automatic promotion places on Tuesday with a 2-1 victory over struggling Shrewsbury Town.

A 4-0 defeat to Bradford City on Saturday had enabled Millwall to climb above Jonathan Whitney s side, but Walsall bounced back with a comfortable win in their game in hand.

First-half goals from Kieron Morris and Rico Henry sealed all three points to give Walsall hope of a top-two finish with two games to go.

In the Championship, Hull City made it five games unbeaten as mid-table Brentford were brushed aside 2-0.

A Harlee Dean own goal had given Steve Bruce s side the lead just after the half-hour mark and Mohamed Diame doubled their advantage on the brink of half-time – albeit after Adama Diomande had miss…

Ajax set Eredivisie record with stunning 13-0 win over VVV-Venlo

Ajax became the first team to score 13 goals in a single Eredivise game with a thumping 13-0 win over VVV-Venlo.

Erik ten Hag s side bounced back in remarkable style following their midweek defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League, beating their own record from 1972 when they thrashed Vitesse 12-1.

Lassina Traore particularly enjoyed himself against the most accommodating of hosts, becoming the first Ajax player to score five goals in an Eredivisie game since Marco van Basten in 1985 and the first to record three assists for the club in a league match since Frenkie de Jong in 2017.

That stunning display meant the Burkina Faso striker became the first player this century to be directly involved in eight goals in a Eredivisie match.

Venlo, who had Chris…
